ACTIVITY LOG - MARCH 2007

Mar. 2 - Still cannot drive to RRG. Did not see bison from the road but someone, Robert or Sonny was trying to get to the house. Talked to Robert later and learned it was him and he got stuck, but did get to the water tank.

Mar. 3 - Got a good close look at all five bison. They had got out of their pasture and come across out land for about two miles when we saw them. Since they were in our pasture and we knew where they were, we did not worry about them and didn’t take them home today. The bison look thin but are really in pretty good shape considering the snow and cold they have had to live in the last two months.

Mar. 4 - John used the ATV and his dogs and put the bison back in their pasture and fixed the fence. There were lots of older bison tracks over closer to their pasture, but on our side of the fence. This indicates that they have been getting out for several days.

Mar. 5 - Called Nicole and told her the Bison had been out and that someone needed to go around all the fence because the snow had broke and stretched the wires all over.

Nicole and Robert both called. Robert said he would check the fence and that he had been coming down to check the bison about every week..

Mar. 11 - Don and I went by RRG on the way to Fresh Tracks. Saw all five bison west of the house. Fresh Tracks had most of the snow melted, water running down the ravine. Only activity I saw was a sparrow hawk on the REA pole and several ravens. The road thru Fresh Tracks was muddy and slick. Did not go on down to Robbins.

Mar. 12 - Don was up by Fresh Tracks again today. Very little traffic up that way since the roads are still muddy and slick. Did not drive into Fresh Tracks. Before the storms we saw up to a hundred antelope on Robbins. Today they saw five.

Mar. 15 - We saw the bison north west of the house today. Haven’t been checking the water since the snow melt has put water in every little low spot on the prairie and animals don’t have to go very far to find water.

Mar. 18 - Saw all five bison north east of the house this morning.

Mar. 20 - Don and John worked on fence between our east pasture and RRG. The bison came over to see what was going on so they got a good close look at them. Don said they look pretty good considering the winter they have been through. Fence on west side of RRG is repaired from snow damage and is in good shape.

March 28 - Don and I saw bison twice today. This morning we checked the water and they were on South side of RRG. This afternoon they had moved to the Northeast corner. We also drove through Fresh Tracks. On the circle from our house to RRG, Fresh Tracks, Robbins and home we saw a prairie dog south of the house on RRG, Meadow Larks, Horned Larks, ducks on the ponds, a Sparrow Hawk, 6 antelope, and lots of Ravens. It was cool and windy today but we still saw one prairie dog out and about south of the house.

March 29 - Don saw the bison again today and drove through Fresh Tracks.

The end of March and the snow is mostly gone. There are still some places that don’t get a whole lot of sun where there are still patches of snow. There has been water everywhere, but it too, is drying up. The grass is starting to get green, Indian Bread Plant and Blue mustard are booming. Other wild flowers won’t be far behind and the birds and the wildlife are more active.
